Beginning in 1987, Southern Decadence Grand Marshal XV began what was to
eventually become a tradition of selecting an official
theme. This was initially a very short-lived "tradition" because no
theme was selected by the following two years' Grand Marshals. But
in 1990 the tradition resumed, with an official color also being chosen. And in the year 2000 an official song was added
to the Grand Marshal's annual proclamations.
